The Arles area has history by the tonne … Roman, Medieval, regional Occitan history and with being part of France overlaid on top. Roman cities like Arles and Nimes and the Pont du Gard viaduct are wonderful to visit … but there are smaller towns too with local culture … and of course the Catholic Popes were in Avignon during the Schism…
